Lovers Hanged by Their Families for Violating Caste Norms

NEW DELHI -- A pair of lovers in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh were hanged by their families for daring to fall in love outside their castes, reports said on Wednesday. The lovers, Vishal, 20, and Sonu, 18, were hanged by their families Monday in Alinagar Ka Majra village, the ***Indian Express*** newspaper reported quoting Muzaffarnagar district Police Chief B.S. Moriya. Vishal, belonged to the priestly Brahmin caste while his girlfriend was from the landowning community of Jats. Moriya said the two were warned earlier to stop meeting each other as the entire village was opposed to their affair.
